Horton and Wohl (1956) introduced the notion of a ‘para-social relationship’ between screen characters or celebrities and those who view them. These authors suggested that the mass media ‘‘give the illusion of face-to-face relationship with the performer’’ (p. 215) and further suggested that the performer and the audience are engaged in a ‘para-social interaction’ based on the ability of the performer to appear to adjust his or her performance to a supposed audience response. Celebrity worship is one manifestation of this broader phenomenon and the Celebrity Attitude Scale is currently the closest measure available for measuring obsessive tendencies among fans (CAS; McCutcheon, Lange, & Houran, 2002). By employing this scale, two apparently negative orientations towards celebrities have been identi?ed, namely ‘intense-personal’ and ‘borderlinepathological’ (e.g. Maltby, Houran, Lange, Ashe, & McCutcheon, 2002). The intense-personal aspect of celebrity worship re?ects intensive and compulsive feelings about the celebrity (e.g. ‘I consider my favourite celebrity to be my soul mate’, ‘When something bad happens to my favourite celebrity I feel like it happened to me’), while the borderline-pathological facet of celebrity worship is typi?ed by uncontrollable behaviours and fantasies regarding scenarios involving a favourite celebrity (‘My favourite celebrity and I have our own code so we can communicate with each other secretly [such as over the TV or special words on the radio’]).
What is crucial to note, here, is the di?erence in the role of interaction with the celebrity when comparing intense-personal and borderline-pathological dimensions of celebrity worship. Within intense-personal aspects, the para-social relationship is passive and receptive on the part of the celebrity worshipper whilst within the borderline-pathological dimension the worshipper believes themselves involved in a relationship with the celebrity, with emphasis on how this may develop in the future. These ?ndings have demonstrated that individuals are preoccupied with and feel close to celebrities to di?erent degrees, but only to the extent of borderline behaviours. Certainly, work on celebrity worship does not encompass the more obsessional behaviours described in the stalking literature and so there exists ?rst the opportunity to extend present knowledge to more pathological dimensions of celebrity obsession.
The second opportunity is to explore pathological dimensions of celebrity obsession via clinical personality measures. Studies of celebrity worship have typically used the absorption–addiction hypothesis to guide research (McCutcheon et al., 2002). According to this model, more extreme aspects of celebrity worship lead to a compromised identity structure in some individuals. This in turn facilitates psychological absorption with a celebrity in an attempt to establish an identity and a sense of ful?llment. The dynamics of the motivational forces driving this absorption might take on an addictive component, leading to more extreme (and perhaps delusional) behaviours to sustain the individual’s satisfaction with the para-social relationship. This view is supported by recent evidence. Maltby, Day, McCutcheon, Houran, and Ashe (2006) found that intense-personal celebrity worship was signi?cantly related to fantasy proneness (around 10% of the shared variance), and borderline-pathological celebrity worship also shared a signi?cant association with fantasy proneness (14% of the shared variance) and dissociation (around 3% of the shared variance). The individual might not be able, therefore, to integrate his or her experiences, thoughts and feelings in everyday consciousness and memory. Thus, as pathological dimensions of celebrity preoccupation become more extreme they should be compared with a dissociation from everyday experiences.

Lady Gaga was one of the big winners on Saturday night at the 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards, taking home the prize for Outstanding Music Artist for her Born This Way? album. The show honors various branches of the media that represent the LGBT community.
The show was hosted by “Glee” stars Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera and included guest spots from Dakota Fanning, “Jersey Shore” nice guy Vinny Guadagnino,? talk show host Wendy Williams, “Top Chef” star Padma Lakshmi and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir.
Broadway veteran Bernadette Peters and TV star John Stamos presented the Vito Russo Award to Craig Zadan and Neil Meron for their work on the NBC musical series “Smash.” The Russo award is presented annually to openly LGBT media professionals who have made a difference in promoting equality. In accepting the award, Meron said the pair, who were also behind the Oscar-winning movie musical “Chicago” and “Hairspray,” have spent a long time trying to “fight, persuade and manipulate” Hollywood into including LGB characters in their work.
Also on hand was openly gay 17-year-old high school student Katy Butler, who received a special award from Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein for her work in launching a Change.org campaign last month to argue for a PG-13 rating for the upcoming documentary, “Bully.”
Other winners included: “Dancing With the Stars” (Outstanding Reality Program), for including the story line of transgender dancer Chaz Bono last season, the HBO film “Cinema Verite” (Outstanding TV Movie or Mini Series), a film focused on the life of a black lesbian teenager, “Pariah” (Outstanding Film — Limited Release), “Battle Against Bullying” from ABC World News with Diane Sawyer (Outstanding TV Journalism Segment) and the “Batwoman” comic book by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman (Outstanding Comic Book).
More awards will be handed out on April 21 in Los Angeles and June 2 in San Francisco.
Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea’s Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was “obscene” and could “taint” young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.
Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball’s enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.
While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga’s tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show ? which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly ? was considered unsuitable for children under 18.
The likely catalyst for the board’s decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of “spreading unhealthy sexual culture” through “lewd lyrics and performances.”
The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn’t), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga’s most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.
Before the show, Gaga tweeted, “I can you hear you Korea. I’m shaking.”
Gaga’s performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including “Bad Romance,” Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” were represented.
Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball set list:
» “Highway Unicorn” » “Government Hooker” » “Born This Way” » “Bloody Mary” » “Bad Romance” » “Fashion of His Love” » “The Queen” » “Just Dance” » “Love Game” » “Telephone” » “Just Dance” » “Heavy Metal Lover” » “Bad Kids” » “Hair” » “Yoü and I” » “Electric Chapel” » “Americano” » “Poker Face” » “Scheiße” » “The Edge of Glory” » “Marry the Night”

Lady Gaga lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The “Americano” singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 “Born This Way Ball” show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and “vulgar” style could corrupt the nation’s youth.
According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation’s moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years.
“She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to Reuters. “This is dangerous.”
Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga’s biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Every seat at the Karno stadium had been sold, with half of them going in the first two hours.
The AP reported that permits for shows are typically issued three weeks before concerts in Jakarta, so it is not uncommon for tickets to be sold well ahead of receiving a final permit. Gaga’s Asian tour started last month and the Indonesian flap is not the first bump she’s faced along the road. Gigs in South Korea? were 18-and-over because conservatives in that country also raised objections over the concert’s content.
Kristen Stewart is a badass. Skeptics judging her based solely on her work in the “Twilight” series might not feel the same way, but brace yourselves for “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Early buzz is very positive for the film, Stewart’s heroic performance included.
It’s not the last time Stewart will get into action hero mode, either. She recently signed on to star in “Cali” for director Nick Cassavetes. Described as a gritty action pic taking place in Los Angeles, “Cali” sees Stewart playing the star of a fake snuff film. After running away with the cash and disappearing for years, Stewart’s character must return from “the dead” to save the sister she left behind.
“That’s my next thing,” Stewart told MTV News about her future plans during the “Snow White and the Huntsman” press junket. “Hopefully after [the 'Snow White' press tour], we can go [shoot 'Cali'] in the summer and lock ourselves away for a few weeks in the Valley, in a little production office, and get together [some] weird, really freaky actor people.”
Indeed, Stewart says that the movie is “filled with the coolest characters,” leaving plenty of room for some memorable “freaky actor people” to climb aboard. But for the actress, on a personal level, “Cali” is a very important project that calls back to her past.
“I’m from the Valley, and it’s been a while since we’ve captured that world,” Stewart said of the movie. “It’s super extreme. Everything about it. It’s extremely violent and extremely funny and extremely emotional. It’s not hard to watch, but it’s really [in your face].”

Nicki and Nas ?it has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
It’s no secret that Nicki Minaj has a flair for the dramatic, and on Wednesday (May 16), when she debuted her “Right by My Side” video on MTV, Nicki surprised many by casting the Queensbridge rap great as her leading man.
The bright and cheery video opens with a pensive Nicki seated in a high-backed chair fit for a queen; her mind is clearly elsewhere, unaware of the camera’s gaze. Only a few seconds pass before Nas struts into the scene and the two lean in to share a smooch only to find their lives subjected to a rewind sequence before their lips touch.
“It all comes down to this, I miss your morning,” Nicki sings on cue as the viewer is taken back in time.
It’s all pretty rosy as the lovesick couple share deep conversation and an inside joke as Nas hands his honey a silver dollar, which she flips into a wishing well. The clip has all the makings of a Nicholas Sparks romance flick: There’s PDA, hand-holding, shopping trips and outdoor lunches. In one scene, Nas ? who sports his trademark half-moon Caesar and big-framed 1980s-inspired glasses ? surprises Nicki with a new car, topped off with a pink bow, of course. The reigning rap queen is so excited she leaps into his open arms.
When Chris Brown shows up for his guest verse and duet-styled hook, he is set outside of the video’s story line, delivering passionate performance scenes but never interrupting the two lovebirds. Breezy is no doubt a superstar, but he sits as a third wheel on Nicki and Nas’ romantic ride.
The vibe of the soft love song switches by the time the Female Weezy’s rap verse rolls in. It’s quite the verbal display as she sits beside Nas, wearing his hoodie and rapping in double-time of her own sexual prowess. “My p—y game so cold, that he always seem to come back/ ‘Cause he knows that it be a wrap when I’m riding it from the back,” she spits while wearing God’s Son’s oversized medallion around her neck.
For the most part, the couple can’t stay away from each other, but there is clearly some separation between the two lovers, even if only for a brief, undefined moment. In the closing scene, a lonely and longing Nicki sits on a park bench under a full moon with a sullen look on her typically animated face. Her frown is quickly remedied when Nas pulls up besides his boo and takes a seat next to her. They first hug and then share a deep and sensual kiss that is sure to get the rumor mill spinning out of control.
What did you think of Nicki Minaj and Nas’ kiss in the “Right By My Side” video? Tell us in the comments!
Lady Gaga turned 26 years young on Wednesday (March 28), and to help celebrate, MTV News drew up a handy A-to-Z guide touching on some of the most exciting things to come from Mother Monster. Read on and share your birthday wishes for the pop princess!
A: April 27. On that day, Gaga will launch what’s sure to be one of the year’s most spectacular spectacles at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea, which brings us to …
B: … Born This Way Ball! We were there when Gaga announced the name of the tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last year, and it has been hinted that we can expect an “electro pop opera.” She had us at “opera.”
C: Castle. Mother Monster tweeted an image of the stage design for the tour, and the elaborate gothic castle has us excited.
D: “Dark.” Gaga’s former creative director, Laurieann Gibson, opened up just last week about why she parted ways with the pop star, telling “ET Canada” that Gaga’s ideas “got a little dark for me creatively.”
E: Elton John. The godmother to John’s adopted son, Gaga has teased a duet with the “Rocket Man” singer for her next album.
F: Fernando Garibay. The musical director behind Born This Way told MTV News that the new album already has a title and concept.
G: Gothic. Veils, brooches and lots of black: Gaga has adopted a gothic theme for her tour, but also in her fashion choices.
H: “Heavy Metal Lover.” This jam has been begging for radio play; at the very least, the BTW cut should make it to the tour set list.
I: Inez & Vinoodh. The Dutch photography duo were heavily involved in the spectacle surrounding Gaga’s “Yoü and I” video, crafting awesome fashion clips after the official music video.
J: Joanne. Lady Gaga’s parents recently opened this Italian trattoria, named for Gaga’s late aunt, on New York City’s Upper West Side.
K: Kinney, as in Taylor Kinney. The beautiful man who played Gaga’s love interest in the “Yoü and I” video is rumored to be her real-life love interest too.
L: Luc Carl. Gaga must still be on good terms with her ex-BF, because she recently tweeted a shout-out to him when he published his new book, “The Drunk Diet.”
M: Monster Pit. The special enclosed space within the Born This Way Ball stage where lucky Monsters who line up for hours, even days, before the show will be able to take in the concerts.
N: Nicola Formichetti. The singer’s new creative director will be her co-HBIC for the foreseeable future.
O: Oprah. The talk-show queen is Gaga’s new BFF, pretty much. She even tapped the OWN network boss to interview her not long after they launched Gaga’s anti-bullying-focused Born This Way Foundation together.
P: Piano. One of the best parts of the Monster Ball was when Gaga would slow things down, chatting with the crowd and showing off her raw talent at the piano.
Q: Quinceañera. Gaga’s one-word Twitter response to a Little Monster who asked how she would celebrate her 26th birthday this year, never mind that it’s the kind of party reserved for 15-year-olds. They grow up so fast.
R: Red Wine. Widely known to be Mother Monster’s alcoholic beverage of choice, alongside whiskey and beer.
S: “Stuck on F—in’ You.” This unreleased and unedited track was leaked by Gaga herself as a Christmas gift to her Little Monsters. She recorded the naughty song on her tour bus last go-round. Can we get another?
T: Tea. Gaga’s non-alcoholic beverage of choice, about which she recently tweeted a lesson she learned: #KettlesAreForTeaNotFashion.
U: Unicorns. The mythical creatures may not exist, but Gaga swoons for them, and why not? Fantasy is as important to her as reality.
V: Video Music Awards. Is it too early to begin the campaign for her to blow our minds again at the 2012 VMAs? We’d even settle for Jo Calderone again.
W: Wigs. Her supply is never-ending and will likely continue to fascinate us right on through her 26th year.
X: “Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson.” Amazing photo book. Seriously, check it out.
Y: Yuyi. Will the mermaid join Gaga on tour this year? As long as the tour bus is sea-creature-friendly.
Z: Z100 Jingle Ball. In December, Gaga performed a short-but-captivating set at New York City’s Madison Square Garden that gave us a peek at what’s to come on the Born This Way Ball.

As expected, Justin Bieber’s new single “Boyfriend” has made an impressive debut. After dropping last Monday, the song has sold 520,000 downloads in its first week.
The number is particularly meaningful since it places him at #2 in all-time first-week singles sales. Flo Rida’s track “Right Round,” featuring a then up-and-coming Ke$ha, has the Biebs beat, according to Hits Daily Double. Flo’s track sits at #1 with 636,000 units moved. Other big sellers include the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” with 465,000 in downloads (#3), and Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” selling 447,000 (#4).
Not only are fans gobbling up the single, but his real-life girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has given the song two thumbs up. “Is it my ring tone? No. I didn’t even know you could make it a ring tone,” Gomez told E! News. “It is a great song.”
Bieber is hardly resting on his laurels. The teen star is back in the studio working on Believe. He explained on Twitter that the album, for which “Boyfriend” is the lead single, will go there. “Here making music addressing the past and the rumors, clearing it all up in the music. Im putting it all out there on this album. #BELIEVE,” he tweeted.
He also tweeted out silly videos of himself acting goofy on mock-up sets of the “Boyfriend” video, which he shot last week. In one, he stands in front of a green screen of icy land and in another he stands in front of a green screen of a fireplace.
Of course, Bieber already shared that there really will be fire and ice in the video. “The concept of this video, I mean it’s not like a steady concept,” he explained to MTV News on the Cali-based set in between shots. “It’s not like ‘Justin follows this girl to this spot.’ No, it’s a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene.
“It’s kind of like bouncing back and forth,” he said. “And then there’s scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It’s fun.”
“The Grey,” or as it had been previously known “Liam Neeson Versus Wolves,” genuinely surprised audiences back in January by being a lot sharper and deeper than the month’s usual fare. Neeson led an ensemble cast as Ottway, a hardnosed wolf hunter who takes charge of the survivors of a plane crash once they’re stranded in the Alaskan wilderness.
To celebrate the Blu-ray and DVD release of “The Grey,” we have an exclusive deleted scene from the film, which takes place shortly after the wreck. It gives you a pretty good idea of that tone of the film with the survivors occasionally joking about their need to keep going.
“A-Team” helmer Joe Carnahan directed and co-wrote “The Grey,” which found fans not only among audiences, but with critics as well. The Blu-ray features more deleted scenes, pre-viz and a commentary track from Carnahan.

Listen up, Little Monsters: It’s Mother Monster’s 26th birthday! And in that quarter of a century (plus one year!), Lady Gaga has managed to reinvent the pop wheel with her eccentric persona and pumping, politically charged dance music. When asked how she planned to celebrate another year, she simply told a Monster on Twitter, “Quinceanera.”
While we’ll be Quinceañera-ing in spirit, we will celebrate her colorful life and career by remembering 10 of the most-revealing bites she’s shared with MTV News. So, dabble on some glitter, put on your best wig, platforms and leotard, and let’s take a stroll down memory lane ? in no particular order.
10. In 2009, Gaga sat down and explained that when “Poker Face” was re-imagined by Kanye West and Kid Cudi as “I Poke Her Face” (later changed to “Make Her Say”), she felt that it was time for someone to get the true meaning of the lady-love euphemism.
Check out our Lady Gaga soundboard, and leave a birthday message for Mother Monster!
“It’s funny, because a lot of my fans were like, ‘Gaga, Kanye wrote a song … and it’s not about what your record’s about. Your record is about gambling, and this song is about dirty sex things,’ ” she recalled. “I said to them, ‘You’re wrong. Kanye was right,’ ” she explained, laughing.
“That’s exactly what this song is about. The record is about how I used to fantasize about women when I was with my boyfriend. It was really exciting that he had so much insight into what the song was about. He’s a cool guy.”
9. Gaga’s pop-music kinship with Beyoncé has been well-documented in two songs: G’s “Telephone” and B’s “Video Phone.” When Gaga headed to shoot the Hype Williams-directed video for “Video Phone,” she had this message for the team: “I said, ‘I want to do you in your video, and I want to tribute you. I want to dress up like you,’ ” Gaga recalled telling her co-star. “And Hype Williams … was so excited. He was like, ‘Gaga, I want no makeup on your face.’ It was really stripped down ? real Beyoncé hair, and we wore the same outfit in the video, and I [paid tribute to] her.”
8. Gaga’s love for her hometown of NYC is hardly surprising, and she shared on the MTV special “Inside the Outside” that when she sat down to write the track “Marry the Night,” “he” was the perfect muse to inspire the song. “It’s never gonna go away, the tan of New York never goes away,” she explained about always identifying with the city that bred her.
7. During the same special, Gaga opened up about her other inspiration ? her fans ? adding, “The biggest surprise to me has been my relationship with my fans. They’ve changed my life. The fans are the thing that you can’t learn; they were the instrument in the music that nobody taught me about.”
6. Always politically charged and motivated, Gaga has made it her mission to not only make chart-topping music, but also be a voice for the disenfranchised. When she sat down for “MTV First: Lady Gaga” in 2011, she explained that, despite her strong political beliefs, she wouldn’t want to run for office.
“Well, first of all, I wouldn’t want to be president for the day,” she said. “And I say that because I really, for myself, it’s important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate because politics can constrain things,” she continued. “So, our message can be completely free of any politics, and we can just surge forward.”
5. During that “MTV First,” when she debuted her video for “Yoü and I,” the singer discussed how difficult love can sometimes be and how her art explores that theme. “Sometimes in love, you can’t make it work,” she said. “No matter what you do, there’s this giant boundary between you and someone else. So, that’s what it’s about: perceiving in your imagination that there’s something magical inside of you that you can make it work.”
4. At the 2011 VMAs, she pulled the ultimate costume change by appearing as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone. Gaga, as Jo, took home the Moonman for her fist-pumping equality anthem “Born This Way.” Afterward, Jo explained, “She was texting me after the award, after I picked it up for her, and she just said, ‘You know, more than anything I’ve ever gotten before, this means more to me, because “Born This Way” is about the fans and the fans are more important to me than anything I do; more important than f—ing breathing, you know?’ “
3. In late 2011, Gaga released her semi-autobiographical video for “Marry the Night,” noting that history can be reinterpreted for her art, if need be. “This was one of the first times that the fashion didn’t propel so much of the story line,” she explained. “It is autobiographical, so the entire story’s true, and it’s through the lens of how I choose to repaint my past.”
2. Behind every great woman is a great Haus. Gaga’s famed, rarely spotted, Haus of Gaga are the folks who help create the live shows, fashions and accessories she wears. And they mean everything to her. “They’re my best friends,” she said. “I’m not really sure what the world thinks … but I do hear things like, ‘Who is the Haus of Gaga?’ and ‘Are you putting out a fashion line?’ And no one gets it. It’s not a commodity. It’s not something that’s meant to be sold.
“It’s a real bond and relationship, and that’s what I think music and art is about,” she said. “They are my heart and soul. They believe in me, and they look at me like a mother and daughter and sister, with pride and love.”
1. In the end, everything Gaga does is for her art, and there’s no place Gaga feels more at home than onstage in front of thousands of screaming fans. “I don’t see the live show as extension of the record at all, it’s meant to be a completely different experience with the artist, with myself. I want my fans to come and go to a party,” she told MTV News.
“I want them to watch the show and think, ‘I’m so f—ing cool that I am here right now.’ It’s about them. It’s about love. It’s about art. The show is meant to bring a tremendous feeling and sentiment of escapism.”

If anyone can thwart “The Avengers,” it’s Sir Ben Kingsley. Not just because he’s probably playing The Mandarin in “Iron Man 3,” either, though that certainly doesn’t hurt. No, it’s because the Oscar-winning actor is bringing a barrel of laughs to the big screen by way of “The Dictator,” the new Sacha Baron Cohen comedy hitting theaters on Wednesday (May 16). The comedy is looking to bring some brand-new hilarious heat to the very same box office that “Avengers” is currently rocking, and Kingsley’s all-aboard for the ride.
Kingsley might not be the first name you’d imagine when thinking of actors likely to appear in a Cohen comedy, but never forget, the two have worked together before?very recently, in fact, in Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo.”
“Sacha does approach comedy scientifically. He doesn’t fool around on the set,” Kingsley told MTV News of the “Dictator” actor. “He’s very focused. He’s very committed to the film and the truths that are wrapped up in this great, amazing comedy experience are always intact.”
It’s that very same commitment to truth that makes “Dictator” such a hilarious success, according to Kingsley.
“The dictatorship is always abhorrent. The dictator is usually a collection of prejudices and bigotry. They loathe democracy,” he said. “All of that is food for the enormous comedy feast that the film turns into, but it’s rooted in certain truths. You get them, or you don’t. What you do get is an amazing blockbuster, summer comedy, but then underneath that layer is a great political satire.”
